Join us for the Plastic Fishing Sailing Barcelona Event ! BarcelonaSail organizes 4 times a year plastic fishing events and these events are free. We have limited available places on boards, as the boat can only take 10 people.
This is a social event, we go sailing and, on the way, we “fish”, as much plastic as possible. Bring some gloves and be prepared to get a bit wet. Make photos, share them on your social media to create awareness for the plastic pollution in front of the Barcelona coast and make this Earth day plastic fishing event a great success! Plastic pollution in the Mediterranean
Plastics are poisoning and injuring marine life in the Mediterranean because many sea animals think plastic is a nice meal and eat it. The plastic stays within the stomach of the fish and some pieces get absorbed in the fish body. Therefore, when we humans eat fish, we eat plastic as well. This can disrupt human growth especially during early puberty.
Every year we see more plastics during our boat tours and the exponential growth of plastics is threatening the Barcelona coast line. To create awareness and to educate we organize the sailing trips for plastic fishing. Did you know that estimates state that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans?
Why do we organize plastic fishing events?
The reason BarcelonaSail organizes this free Plastic Fishing Summer Sailing Barcelona Event because we found an embarrassing amount of plastic pollution during sailing in Barcelona. It is clear that the majority of this plastic waste is locally generated, flushed and blown into the Mediterranean.
It is disappointing that Spain is not able to reduce the amount of trash that is left on the beach every day. This can be done easily through media focus, combined with some policing and ticketing. At this moment we, BarcelonaSail, Zero waste Barcelona, Surfriders Barcelona, and many other beach cleaning organizations, remove plastic waste from others because Spain is too lazy to enforce normal behavior.
In our very detailed article “Plastic Pollution during Sailing in Barcelona” we demonstrate that plastic is here to stay. The plastic production will double in 3 years, and we can do something about this by simply changing our habits. Say no to single use plastic in order to keep the oceans and seas clean, and trash your plastic in designated plastic collectors.
